A Unique Urban Presence
The Tudor Building at 19th & Washington comprises an entire city block and originally served as the showroom for the The Wrought Iron Range Company, one of St. Louis' largest and most important manufacturers of stoves. Built in 1925 and designed in the Tudor Revival style, with a stuccoed and half-timbered second story, this building successfully adapted a high-style form of residential architecture for a commercial purpose. Architect Albert Knell's design included tall brick piers and an elaborate primary entrance surround with an arched hood molding. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, and is part of the larger Lucas Avenue Industrial Historic District, an area notable for its diverse manufacturing history, and solid masonry structures highlighted by stone and terra cotta details.
Today, The Tudor Building and its surrounding neighborhood is experiencing a rebirth, featuring development of both living and working units. Space for sidewalk cafes, restaurants, bars, and retail stores is available, as well as unique street-level apartments with open patios. We are creating urban retail store fronts that open up onto Washington Avenue. This project will be paying for the reconfiguration of Washington Avenue between 18th Street and 21st Street. Some of the improvements will include reducing Washington from 4 lanes to 2 lanes. Also, there will be newly created angled parking and more pedestrian-friendly walkways.
